a dog’s life

Varanasi in India is one of my favourite places in the world. Not only because of the people or the best lassi, I’ve ever tasted but because of the dogs that roam the streets. Where I come from most dogs walk around with their human friend, but here the city is their home. They instinctively avoid people who mean them harm, protect each other if need be and know exactly when they meet a dog person — guilty as charged.

Every day photographing them was a day of surprising, funny and also sad moments. Street life comes with dangers, especially at night and during the freezing cold winter. To improve their chances, many of them move in packs and there are times you find yourself in a tens situation after you walked into the wrong street at night. Nonetheless, I’m sure Varanasi would lose a bit of its soul if these creatures wouldn’t be around to greet you in the morning.
